Review of Zebra F-301 Compact

So, I just got this pen from JetPens.com (awesome site that sells Japanese pens and stationery) and I am supposed to review it, and since the normal Zebra F-301 is a pen that I love anyway I figured it would be easy enough.

If you’d like to see something that I’ve done with the F-301, here’s one of my favorite drawings that I’ve ever done, which was done with that pen. I think that one looks way better on paper, and that’s probably my only problem with this pen: the ink is very light, and doesn’t scan well in black and white, but that isn’t really what the pen is for, so I won’t hold it against it.

What this pen is great for, or at least what I use it for, is just sketching. Since for at some point I decided I never wanted to use pencil again, this pen has been perfect. It’s reliable and durable, and always in my pocket. Which why the compact, which I haven’t really mentioned how it is compact, is awesome. It is double ultra super pocket (or lanyard or whatever) ready.

So, the reason it’s compact is because the back half of the pen acts as the lid of the pen, as well. So it’s shorter than a normal pen (and also not pointy in your pocket), and unfolds to a full size pen. Which is flippin’ sweet. It’s also as comfortable to hold and durable as the normal F-301, and is still made of stainless steal with makes it feel super classy.

Anyways, I like this pen. It’s cheap and reliable and great for sketching, I just don’t use it for the final product (for that I usually use my Tachikawa Linemarker A.T., which I also bought from JetPens.com).

TL;DR: JetPens.com is awesome, Zebra F-301 Compact is awesome for sketchin’, and you can buy it here. It’s like three bucks, so yeah. Pretty awesome.

“And it was still hot.”
Possibly the most perfect line in all of children’s literature?
I’m deeply saddened by the passing of Maurice Sendak. It feels like such a loss. His books were such an integral part of my childhood, of developing my love of reading. As an adult, I was honored to be his publicist at Harper.
I keep thinking of this interview he gave on “Fresh Air” last year, with his thoughts on dying: “I have nothing now but praise for my life. I’m not unhappy. I cry a lot because I miss people. They die and I can’t stop them. They leave me and I love them more. … What I dread is the isolation. … There are so many beautiful things in the world which I will have to leave when I die, but I’m ready, I’m ready, I’m ready.”
Thank you for all the adventures, Mr. Sendak. We love you more.

I usually reserve reblogs to my other less arty blog, but I felt I should put this here.

Sorry for my abysmal handwriting.

Sorry for my abysmal handwriting.

I had an idea!

I could have a website dedicated to box men dying, and then this could stay as my general art blog. Or something. Thoughts?

This is a little better.

This is a little better.

I attempted to make some art that was suitable for children’s books, and they all ended up looking like this.

I’m sorry, but I draw the line at mudkip. No mudkip.
